Orthopedic Anesthesia

In Boulder, CO orthopedic surgery is one of our most common procedures.  It offers a wide variety of procedures with many options for anesthesia.

Anesthetic options may include General Anesthetics, Regional Anesthetics, various Pain Blocks, Local Anesthetics and medications.  Often a combination of these will be recommended depending on the type of surgery and individual anesthetic needs.

Knee arthroscopies are typically done under General Anesthesia or sometimes a Regional Anesthetic such as a spinal.  If the procedure is more involved, such as an ACL repair, frequently a Pain Block such as a Femoral Block may be offered. 

Shoulder surgeries typically are done under General Anesthesia.  Occasionally your surgeon may recommend a Pain Block such as an Interscalene Block.

Total joint replacement or resurfacing procedures are typically done under General Anesthesia.  Frequently a Pain Block, Regional Anesthetic, or combination of these is administered to assist with Post Operative pain control.

Hand or wrist surgeries can be done under General Anesthesia, Regional Anesthetics, or local with sedation which is call a MAC for Monitored Anesthesia Care.

Podiatric surgery is frequently done under local with sedation or a MAC which stands for Monitored Anesthesia Care or General Anesthesia.
